Local Speed Limits
The speed limit in Greece according to the Road Traffic Code is 50 kilometers in the city and in the residential areas, 80 kilometers on expressways and 100-120 on motorways. Always keep the speeds listed on the signs along the road on which you are driving. The speed limit is controlled in many areas by satellite and camcorder, so be very careful.
Seatbelts
We recommend and advise all occupants of the rented car to wear seat belts. Children should sit in child seats, which can be requested by Drivenow personnel and be restrained by safety belts. Despite technological advances in car safety, particularly with the use of airbags, it is still necessary to use seat belts. The Traffic Police carries out rigorous checks on the use of seat belts and imposes corresponding fines as well as the removal of the driving license.
Do not drive when you drink
Be sure not to violate the Road Traffic Code driving under the influence of alcohol or any other substance. The permissible blood alcohol level is 0.05 percent. If you overcome it you will pay a fine. If your blood alcohol content is more than 0.08 percent, this is considered a criminal offense and you will be detained. Random altercations are happening very often, especially late at night in the form of unplanned control on the main streets.
Only park in permissible parking spaces
Only park in designated parking areas where parking is permitted. If you park in forbidden areas, you will receive an illegal parking call from the Traffic Police or the Municipal Police and you will probably remove your car's plates or be removed by a special vehicle. Park your rented car in a safe place where there is plenty of space to pass through other cars and in controlled parking areas by issuing a corresponding ticket. You will find parking spots with valetters at various points in each city.
Use Mobile Phone
The use of a mobile phone while driving is forbidden, explicitly or indirectly, in all EU countries, as it has been shown to increase the risk of fatal accidents fivefold.
In Greece, it is acceptable to use hands-free equipment or equipment (Bluetooth) that allows communication without the use of hands. Mobile phone in-use is only allowed when it is in a special position, for open listening or when used with audio wireless communication. The use of hands-free equipment is prohibited.
Emergency Phone
Across Europe, as in Greece, the emergency call number is 112 (from a mobile phone) and you can call for free when there is an urgent need.
Tips for eco driving
- Avoid pushing the throttle too much and prefer to push it with your foot as little as possible: the deeper the pedal gets, the more fuel is consumed, regardless of the engine speed.
- Make rapid gear changes to high gears and delay changes to the small gear ratios (in other words drive as much as possible with fourth or fifth).
- Avoid any unnecessary deceleration, braking or changing gear
